    Raising marbles, using gravity

I'd go with the archimedes screw design, only set it vertically. You'd need a stopper inserted into the screw to stop the marble running back that can rise with the marble, which becomes the tricky bit. I'd probably use a conveyor belt (with stopper blocks attached to it) geared from the falling...

    Adobe CS2 for FREE!

Technically, it's not free. They're offering a download for anyone who already has a valid licence key that doesn't make you jump through the usual bells and whistles of proving you have a valid licence. In practice however...

    Storing green oak

Cheers for that. Sadly I don't have any outside space (I live in a 2 up, 2 down terrace with no yard). I'll have to look at doing some major reworking of the cellar to get them laid down (and then pile all the rubbish back on top). Would running a dehumidifier be a good or bad idea? In other...

    Storing green oak

Morning all. I've just picked up some recently planked green oak, approximately 2" thick, and 5' long for the longest piece. Having just wrestled it into the cellar/workshop, I'm now stuck with a quandary about how to store it. My options are as follows: 1) Store it vertically. This is easy...

    An expensive sound

Latest update... After taking the motor apart, it looks like I've found the culprit. Their are two permanent magnets glued to the side of the case, and the spindle (with coil attached) runs down the middle. One of the magnets had come unstuck, clonked onto the coil and spun around till it hit...

    An expensive sound

I'll give it a poke when I get home. Many thanks.

    An expensive sound

With the drive belt disengaged, it still makes a horrid sound, so it's narrowed down to the motor at least. So the next obvious question is about the ease of changing the motor. I work reasonably close to the Warrington branch of Axminster, so at least picking up a replacement shouldn't be too...

    An expensive sound

The headstock will turn by hand, quietly, albeit a little stiffly. I'll have a look at the drive belt when I get home tonight. The lathe is probably about 2 years old. Cheers for the advice. Fingers crossed it's something simple. Sam.

    An expensive sound

I think the bearings on my Axminster AWVSL have died. I was having a play with a banksia nut (my first attempt) so I had the vacuum on and ear defenders (as the vac is rather loud). When I turned off the lathe after producing nothing but dust for 5 minutes, I noticed that the nut had stopped...

Coppering/barrel making & thoughts on the safety industry...

In defence of HSE: Everyone has the right to not be pressured into unsafe work practices by their employer. Legislation to force employers to adopt safe working practices is a good thing. I work for a construction/engineering company, and we get regular bulletins of things that have cocked up...

What exactly are 'ceramide R's' ?

A common (yet dangerous) chemical in far too many products is dihydrogen monoxide. It's responsible for more deaths per year than all other chemicals in the cosmetics industry combined. Often the manufacturers call it by another name just to confuse you, as they don't want you to know it is in...

    Android Apps

Google Sky, Connect 4, Zombie Run*, Remembeer and Battery Graph * All the others are fairly self explanatory, but Zombie Run needs explaining. It needs GPS and a data connection. It loads up Google Maps based on your location and asks you for a destination. It then loads up the map with zombies...

144,000 mileage on a volvo - is it too high?

I've got a 9 year old Skoda Octavia Estate (1.9TDi) and it's done about 180,000 miles. The engine is fine, nigh on indestructible, but the rest of the car is starting to fall apart in expensive ways. Then again, I don't exactly give it an easy ride (bar giving it a full service every 6 months)...

    How come, we spend billions

More accurately, you've given up the piracy (and ship wrecking) and moved on to extortion via tourism :)

    How come, we spend billions

Piracy is wrong as well, no doubt about it, but I still fail to see a need to debase our own humanity just because some other people are complete cock ends.

    How come, we spend billions

It doesn't help that our navy is woefully ill suited to this sort of police action. We have a lot of ludicrously expensive Destroyers that can't do the job they're supposed to (missile systems still not working, and no carriers to protect anyway) doing a job they were never designed for.

    Copyright

There's a whole load of hurt in 'derivative works', especially in American law. I've no idea what the status is here in the UK, but probably horribly complex.
