thinking of this lathe, opinions please..

Hmmm...I was just thinking about the same lathe as Steve, but I'm not sure now :? Steve mentioned Record in his original post too, but there's been no mention of Record in the replies. Are they a suitable alternative? It's a little more expensive, but I see the Record CL1-VS is listed on...

I'll have a (strictly amateur!) go too :D

    Making a small box...OMG it's hard!

Thanks Dick (and everyone else!) :) I wasn't sure about putting that ring on myself, but the area here is predominently a retirement area, and so I felt that I may stand more chance of a sale if older fingers had something to grip to remove the lid. I might do another without a ring and see...

    Making a small box...OMG it's hard!

I was sold it as dry and ready for turning, although I've never experienced wood that ribbons when cut when it's dry before! I bought a mixed box of apple/pear, but it all looks the same to me. I've just started a small clock with what was labelled as pear, but I think it's the same as the...

    Making a small box...OMG it's hard!

Thanks all - I suspect it's been something of a fluke though! I did think about the 1/3...2/3 rule, but not until after I'd nearly finished it...doh!! My wife's not sure about it. I'm planning to do some craft fairs (as far as I know there's no-one else locally doing woodturning) and...

    Making a small box...OMG it's hard!

Thanks all :) All finished and it turned out ok in the end - I didn't damage either the box or myself in the process  I'll post some photos of it when I take them :)

    Making a small box...OMG it's hard!

Tam, That's great, thank you :D Just a quick question...do I use the long thin round bar scraper, or the flat multi-edge scraper??

    Making a small box...OMG it's hard!

I decided to try my first box in applewood today. I think I'm being over ambitious, as it's 36mm internal diameter and 80mm depth. It's going ok so far, but I can't see a damn thing inside when the scraper's in there! I'm nearly at the bottom, and have yet to attempt to get the inside walls...

    Wood to practice on...where from?

Lots of good ideas there - thanks all :) I've found two local freecycle groups, so I'll try them, and I know of a local tree surgeon, so I'll give him a ring too. Now...if I get all this green wood, what do I do with it? I know I can turn green, but as it dries it'll deform, so for practice...

    Wood to practice on...where from?

Ok...so to extend the n00b question a little further... I'm guessing I don't just ring a tree surgeon and tell him I want trees!! What's best to ask for and are there any kind of ballpark figures for what they should be asking for logs? The wood from them will be green, so I need to seal the...

    Wood to practice on...where from?

Thanks guys :) You know, being right on the edge of the New Forest you'd have thought this would have been a minor hive of woodturning activity. Not so. The only shop that stocks any wood turning items carries a very poor range and is sporadic in their stock. My nearest decent tool/timber...

    Wood to practice on...where from?

Obviously this is kinda area specific, but does anyone have any tips on where to economically buy wood suitable for practicing with? I don't fancy depending on the local B&Q, and don't really know what I'm asking for if I go to a nearby timber yard

Record Coronet No0 - replace drive belt

Wow!! Just as well I didn't get time to try it today! As you stand looking at the lathe I've taken off the set screw and washer from the end at the left-hand side of the tailstock and tried tapping the shaft through from left to right, ie. from outboard to inboard on the lathe.

Record Coronet No0 - replace drive belt

Oh well...I've just been whacking it...I'll try WHACKING it with a mallet and block tomorrow :) I bought it secondhand and have my Jet mini lathe if I go too far and wreck it ;-) Thanks Richard.

Record Coronet No0 - replace drive belt

B*gger, then it's well and truly stuck. It didn't budge as much as a gnats whisker when I was tapping it with mallet and wooden block :-( Thanks Tam :)

Record Coronet No0 - replace drive belt

Does anyone have any eaperience with replacing the drive bely on the Record Coronet lathes? I have a no0, but I'd guess they were all the same. The bottom (motor) spindle is easy enough, but the top one looks like I have to remove the headstock shaft from the headstock bearings to do it? I've...

    Friction Polish issue

I use the same Record polish on pens, and a cheap brand of kitchen roll. I apply some to a wad of paper (paper over the neck of the bottle, and tip the bottle to wet the paper), then using the lathe at the highest speed, wipe it over from one end to another. Then with light pressure begin...

    FOX F46-719 Lathe & FX4000 Chuck - any good?

I've changed my mind about this. There doesn't seem to be a lot of info about the Fox brand around, and the little I've read while ok for the lathe (in the main), refers to cheap finishes and production of the chucks. I've switched to good 'ol Axminster and am thinking about the Jet 1014 Mini...

    FOX F46-719 Lathe & FX4000 Chuck - any good?

Thanks Colin - I hadn't seen that. From reading it apparently the lathe itself is ok, but is let down by the quality of the accessories. That was written over a year ago. Anyone have any updates?
