    Millers Falls No 2

Sorry Andy. I misread you. Yes, you are correct about the pin holes. I have had success with making a pin wrench from a piece of hardwood and some steel rods but if you have such a wrench that is of course the better tool to use once the soaking has done it's job.

    Millers Falls No 2

As much as I agree with Claus about dirt and grime being the actual cause of stubbornness, just go gently with the chuck. It is very easy to marr the chuck with a pipe wrench. I have had half a dozen of this model and when I've had trouble removing the chuck I have lubricated the chuck just like...

1980 hand drill turns out surprisingly good

I have an identical one. It's just a tad heavier than the Goodell Pratt no 5.5 and both are really good for drilling slightly larger holes in both metal and wood. I have a slight obsession with hand drill so I've tried a good few. I wouldn't want to use a heavier one.

Seeking more information about the E.A. Berg Mfg Co

Many thanks Billy. I had seen what Wolfgang has and the story on Bahco was also familiar. But you're right, it contains a some hidden facts which I will approach in my next story.

Seeking more information about the E.A. Berg Mfg Co

I've spent a lot of time trying to understand what and when the Eskilstuna maker E.A. Berg Mfg Co made whatever they made. So if any of you who read this forum have any information, tool samples and trade catalogues you'd like to share, I'd love to hear from you. I am especially interested in...

Help with identifying an old dovetail saw

OK, my fault for not asking the question. But I will do it now. Anyone recognize the tenon saw? Come on ye Britons. I'm sure you have seen this one before. All I need is a pointer. Age? Manufacturer? https://www.flickr.com/photos/finnberg6 ... 804195270/

    Anyone good at identifying braces?

Hi Dennis Ha, it seems as though you bought that brace through one of the Finnish auction sites. The brace is a German made Flott bit brace. The Flott braces are generally very good value for money. This model with a button operated ratchet is uncommon. If you inspect the sides of the sweep you...

Help with identifying an old dovetail saw

Not sure if this will help anyone with any kind of identification. But I found another saw with similar features and another custom etch. This time it was a 12 inch tenon saw with beech handle, split nuts and an etch using the same kind of typography. Pictures and more information here...

Help with identifying an old dovetail saw

Hi Andy Yes, I had seen that story before. Etches are fascinating. I have a great affection for those special etches on the Warranted, hardware and retailer saws. The thing about my saw is that I think I have previously seen that same coat of arms on a saw plate. This doesn't have to mean a...

Help with identifying an old dovetail saw

I recently found a dovetail saw, which is badly beaten. The handle is partially damaged, the saw nuts are missing and the saw plate is so beaten that the tooth line is just a continuous wave. I have a feeling the saw plate is beyond restoration. What was very interesting about this saw is that...

    Rust on plane bodies

Bedrock, If your no 10 is from the same period as the ones I've had, i.e. later era UK made then I do think the bodies were much more prone to rust than most others. If your no 10 has one cheek thinner than the other, has a depth adjusting wheel made of steel and possibly also a misaligned mouth...

how to remove the handle from a tenon saw

I can understand that there are situations where you just don't want to remove the handle, for example when you have split nuts or a very old and valuable saw. But in most cases removing the handle is the only way of cleaning the whole saw plate without staining the handle from the muck produced...

how to remove the handle from a tenon saw

A picture of the saw would certainly help. I recently worked on a cheap saw where the holes in the plate had been punched, not drilled. I'm not sure how it was done but the extraneous steel had not been removed but was left on the saw plate as a kind of integrated ferrule pointing out from (the...

A new and interesting blog from Europe

Considering that the Regal ship Vasa sank in 1628 I'd think some damage to the surface would be expected. So I think it might be hard to know what tools were used for surface flattening. And speaking entirely without insight could it not also be that planes for ship building were made for quick...

    Morrill Apex Special Saw Set

I didn't look close enough on you saw set. Yours has a rotating anvil very much like the Eclipse and Somax saw sets. Whatever it says on the scale this not exact science and I would vote against setting teeth looking at the scale on a saw set. It is entirely possible that you can set as fine...

    Morrill Apex Special Saw Set

The Morrill Apex saw set is a decent saw set with a wide anvil which is a good thing for setting larger teeth but bad for fine teeth. So don't use this saw set to set your dovetail or tenon saws. It might harm the teeth and you will struggle to set one tooth at a time. As Seagoon says, the screw...

Can you identify this tenon saw

At last. I now have two sources telling me that my saw is a Atkins tenon saw. Michael Merlo, who sells saws on youknowwhere tells me he owns a similar one. And just recently an Englishman called John told me he owns another one. John also had an interesting bit of information. He told me the...

Can you identify this tenon saw

That is also a notion that has crossed my mind. But I agree with others that the handle doesn't look right. The brass back is also unseen on a Atkins saw, which is why I was hoping someone in the UK would recognize this saw. The US makers almost never made backsaws with brass backs unless they...

Can you identify this tenon saw

Hi Jacob I know it says Indianapolis on the medallion. That's why I bought it. I like the Atkins saws. But the nuts are probably not from an Atkins saw because no source would accept that Atkins would have made a saw like this. I was silly enough to buy before I thought. Had I done my research...
