What are the most beautiful tools that you own

I have a number of rough finished tools my father made that while functional ain't gonna win any beauty contests. One of my best factory tools is a low angle block plane (https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/hand-tools/planes/block/111924-veritas-nx60-block-plane) my wife gave me when it...

    Best way to cut this?

Search out 3 way mitre joint. You'll get your choice of magazine articles and YouTubeless videos. There are joinery books that used to have that information too. Pete

    Mini digger security

If the starter solenoid is easy to access you could remove it and put in a duff one. The miscreant will look in and see it there and not suspect it is a dummy. Problem is that the machine's engine compartment needs to be kept spotless or they will see that it has been played with. Pete

    Spitfire Mk.VB

To add to what was already said. A fixed tail wheel was simpler to make/maintain and weighed less than one with a retracting system. Pete

    Spindle Wobble - Charnwood W812

The spindle is bent. Put the mouse cursor on the taper where it comes out of the shaft and you can easily see it oscillating. You can still turn if the turning can be made in one go. If you remove and remount a turning to complete the other end it will never be centred. You will need to decide...

    Wall panelling query

I use plinth block when I did a mission/shake style to our basement bathroom. It was new work so I didn't have to make anything fit existing. To me the key is to layer your way out. 3/8" for the verticals to define the panels. 1/2" at the corners. 3/4 for the horizontals (baseboards, dado and...

Helical slot in stainless steel tube - anyone have the equipment for this?

If the tube can be made from flat sheet it could have a straight angled slot cut and then rolled into a tube with the seam welded. The machining is then the easy part (relatively speeking) but making a tube out of it presents its own problems. Best of luck with your project. Pete

    LED lighting for workshop

Before I bought lights for the shop I did a lot of searching and came up with 100 foot candles per square foot for woodworking. After figuring and converting it boiled down to 1000 lumens per square meter. So I bought 16 of, 4000 lumen batons to light up my 646 square foot/60 square metre shop...

    Moore & Wright Square question

In machining you can get some tools in several grades or classes. Tool room, inspection, calibration etc. Your square would be a grade better than toolroom, as an inspector would be using it for acceptance. Pete

The maths behind cutting these bevels?

uziwood786 it is a good thing you didn't ask how to do it with a dinosaur bone or there would be the added aspect of creationism verses evolutionism to the mix and would the dinosaurs have used math, geometry or rule of claw to figure it out. 🤣🤣🤣 I being a new world barbarian would have used...

Which of these Axi Extractors? needs to be small, 3 pin plug and able to use fine filter?

Two things to understand. Most high volume low pressure (HVLP) collectors are rated with only the impeller and no ducting, filters, etc on them. In the real world they draw about half the claims. Secondly ducts have limits to the amount of air that can flow through them because of wall surface...

    Furniture paint recommendations?

What kind of wood Jacob? I’ve been ebonizing oak with tannin and steel wool dissolved in vinegar. It makes a great black and you can do other woods like maple or cherry. Wipe it down with tannin dissolved in water and after it dries do the same with the steel wool in vinegar. You can repeat the...

    Building a Workshop

For what it is worth I used a 5hp and later a 3hp cabinet saw with 52" extension rails In a 12' wide portion (18" wide shelves down one side making it narrower) of my basement. I would spin the saw to make crosscuts and then again for rips. With the saw off, went over it to get to the other...
