(SOLD) As new Record Power PT300 Planer Thicknesser

Dear Malcolm and Chris, Apologies, I had hoped the weather would have allowed me to clear the garage to take photos of the table saw, bandsaw and extractor so I could properly advertise them for sale but it has rained all day! All the machinery was bought new in 2009: - The TS315 table saw...

    Selecting glazing packers

Hi Dibs, Here you go: The window manufactuer never called me back! Grrr!

    Selecting glazing packers

Thanks Jason, I see how your comment applies to internally beaded PVC frames with drainage holes but I have externally beaded and vented/drained timber frames without explicit drainage holes. However, if you are suggesting that water migrates along the grooves by capillary action then I can...

    Selecting glazing packers

Dear all, I have to glaze 18 vented and drained timber window casements with external beading. I'm using 24mm DGUs and following the D3 method statement from Hodgson Sealants which uses their Flexistrip glazing tape (thanks to Dibs for suggesting it) as described here...

    Welding advice

Hmmm. I was quite happy until I read the comments posted earlier today. I was happy because this morning I spoke to a mobile welder who said there should be no problem in achieving the weld and recommended that I embed a strip of fireproof board (eg Vermiculite) within the padstone beneath...

    Welding advice

Thanks Graham and 'No skills'. I shall take a printout of the above picture to my local welding shop tomorrow and ask about the feasibility of a 'full penetration weld' assuming the faces to be joined have been pre-chamfered. Thanks again, Chris

    Welding advice

Hi Jason, The Structural Engineer specified the welded joint! This is because the surface area over which bolts would otherwise be used is too small to resist the forces at play. Unfortunately, a complicated two stage build forced me to this irritating compromise situation - there was no way...

    Welding advice

Dear members, I need to have two 15mm thick steel plates butt welded together in situ (structural steel). The butt weld joint will be approx 215mm long. The joint will eventually lay directly on a concrete padstone that will be cast in situ. I have yet to cast the padstone but one of the...

Oak fascias & soffits - commit or avoid?

Dear Forumites, I'm about to install some new fascias and soffits on my house and have been considering oak. I'm caught in two minds over this decision as: 1. Oak's tendency to shrink during summer months can create huge gaps (6-8mm) that may permit large insects to enter and possibly look...

    Broadband recommendations

+1 (excuse pun) for Plusnet. I've also been with them for almost a decade which speaks for itself. I've suffered NTL, Tiscali, Freeserve, AOL and others in the past. Karl: If you decide to join Plusnet then give Michael7 (above) the chance to recommend you electronically (you'll have to PM...

    For your (engineer's) eyes only.

Thanks for the reference, I've just read up on them and they seem pretty useful for all sorts of situations! I'm special...not really - I just had some M12 spring washers to hand!

    For your (engineer's) eyes only.

I used the 'double sided timber connectors' you refer to between the two timbers that I was bolting together.

    For your (engineer's) eyes only.

One more thing to consider before you dismiss spring/split washers and their use in tandem with a plain washer: Where the substrate being fastened may shrink (eg timber) then the spring washer gives some margin for shrinkage before the fastening becomes completely ineffective. I recently used...

IT help sought - SORTED Thanks to ChrisD

I'm glad to read that you got the hub working Bob! Sadly, my advice is a 'fringe benefit' of a mis-spent youth and a soul sapping career... :( Kind regards, Chris

IT help sought - SORTED Thanks to ChrisD

Hi Bob, On your desktop computer, look in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\inf". Copy all [usb*.inf] and [usb*.pnf] files to a CD/floppy/memory-stick along with the [c:\windows\system32\drivers\usbhub.sys] binary file. Make sure that all of these files are in the same directory on your removeable...

    Ear defenders with built-in radio

I'm with Roger on this one - I use radio ear-muffs while mowing and strimming the grass to reduce the boredom. Don't buy the Husqvarna muffs as the head-band on my pair have already snapped although gaffer tape was sufficient to repair it.
