know what it's for please?

I'm pretty sure it's a leather working tool, used hot to smooth wax onto a row of stitching to make it waterproof. Not sure of the exact name though.

COBBLERS!
No not a comment. No idea of what it is called, but I am 90% sure it was used by cobblers.
Heated up and coloured hard wax spread around re-soled shoes (and heels).
To colour the leather edge and waterproof same.

Thankyou for the info.
I'm left wondering what use he found for it
as I'm sure he never worked with leather.
Probably one of those 'this might come in handy
for something' items you occasionally pick up.

Lots of (poor) people mended their own shoes - that's why there are so many lasts around.
