DIY RPM meter??

Does anybody know of an off the shelf RPM meter that I could fit to my lathe, or one that could be easily made up/bodged?

I've no real need for one, but thought that it may be a nice add on - in all honesty, I'm a little bored, and got thinking... I've had a quick look on ebay and only found the hand held ones, there must be a way of modifying this

Hi Aled,
The engine tachometers that connect to the spark plug lead will multiply the pulses to give the rpm so if you used one of these on your lathe it would read double the speed.

Yes that type of tachometer would work, but I was thinking of something more permanent.

I've ordred a cycle computer that reads rpm, I've no idea whether it'll read to 2000+ rpm, but it's only costing me £4 so it's not the end of the world if it doesn't succeed.

I've read about people using bike computers/speed sensors on kit cars and the like, think they had a sensor mounted on the suspension via a bracket and some sort of marker/magnet on a wheel. Bodes well for you I think.
