My new best mate, a tree surgeon, delivered this to my door today. The yew tree was due for disposal but he saved some of the largest chunks for me. I've been counting the growth rings and it's well over 100 years old

I also got my new lathe set up today. Still need to buy some tools and a grinder though. I've spent many happy minutes just watching the wood whizzing round between the centres. If only I had a roughing out gouge...

Yew is pretty good for not splitting compared to other woods but get some paint / PVA or wax slapped on the ends of those logs. (Lucky ***  )

It's all under plastic sheeting at the moment but I'll nip to B&Q tomorrow and buy something for the ends. The only old paint I have in the garage at the moment is my daughter's fluorescent pink.

Wow, looks like there are many happy hours of turning in that lot, =D> not surprising he is your best friend!! And some really large diameters as well. Not envious at all.[-( Enough to try some green and leave some to dry for a few years.
I have 1 piece that I have turned some natural edge bowls from and the timber looks stunning.

Happy turning, and hurry up and get some tools.

Well done Paul :D
Some useful looking sizes their.
I think Yew is a lovely timber to turn with some beautiful grain patterns and colours, though the colour soon darkens after turning, but it is still one of me favs :D
Enjoy it.
Will look forward to seeing what you turn out with it all.

What a great haul :D

Seasoned yew sells for about £1 per kg on e-bay,so there's a fair bit of moneys-worth there.
(I've spent the afternoon building more timber racks to store my latest haul of yew on,and several bits of that were somewhat heavy  )

Happy turning!

Andrew

A nice load and I can see some beautiful natural edged bowls etc in that lot. Yes, people will pay silly money for even small branch bits of yew so looks like a great investment. If any of you have the space why not plant a yew tree for generations of woodturners. I planted one a few weeks ago.

Well I planted two about ten years ago, and they are all of 2 feet high now :(
Reckon it's going to be several generations before they make useful timber, by which time climate change will probably have droughted them out anyway.
