you might have noticed on the news that the Apple iphone is launched today in the US and some people have been waiting on line nearly a week to get one

If it werent for the fact that my phone is paid for by work i would get one when they get launched here at the end of the year.

....I might even wangle one any way

am i the only sad geek here?

Tom

I suspect I will get one when my ipod packs in. It does look nice, and I am a sucker for gadgets. :D

I'm very intrigued especially if the software is all it's cracked up to be in terms of usability etc. Wonder which UK mobile provider will offer them?

Hi Tom,

Given that as with any other apple product I could doubtless buy any one of many different products that will do exactly the same job as the iphone, only better, cheaper and more reliably; and meaning that I wouldn't have to go anywhere near the smug gits that work in the apple shops, I would have to answer 'No'.
That said, if I was able to acquire one for free, that's a different matter

V. (another sad geek :D )

If the iPod software design and usability is anything to go by the Iphone will be useless. The ipod software and its navigation wheel has to be one of the hardest Human Interface Device s I have ever come accross to use.
I suspect the thing will have a tiny battery life in use. ten days on standby but 5 hours once you actually use the thing for anything like video or mp3.
The touch panel is unlikely to stay looking good for long. Incidentally how does a blind person use a touch screen. Phones with buttons have registration marks on the buttons for this purpose.
The camera, as I understand is 2 megapixel, no flash, no zoom which is a bit poor by comparison with Sony Ericsson models.
The suggested cost is risible. Private users would have to be complete fashion victims to buy one and any corporate buyer who kits out their company with them should be fired for wasting company resources.

So no I probably won't be buying one.

Cheers Mike

Whats wrong with the Ipod :?: I have tried a few of its competitors and find the Ipod's interface the easiest. What do you have difficulty with?

I haven't tried any of the iPods competitors so I have nothing to compare it to, I do have an ipod which was bought for me though. Personally I find the wee thumbwheel hideous to use. Its usually a case of having to go backwards and forwards a few times to select anything in particular. The pause and off / press and hold thing ? How long am I supposed to stand here pressing the thing. Sometimes it never goes off and I have to press & hold repeatedly. The list is endless - to be honest I hate it and would never have bought one for myself especially if I had a chance to try out a few models side by side. I'm afraid it's another example of Apple style over substance for me.
Cheers Mike

Actually, no, actually.
No.

A lot of style, sure, but a lot of substance, too. Being able to take my entire CD collection into my car in my palm isn't smoke and mirrors, it's a major advantage. Ditto using it connected to my home hi-fi in either England or France. Not style, substance.

As for appreciating and supporting style - isn't that one reason for buying expensive planes? Honest?

And, and (slavering slightly) don't forget that the designer of the iPod and iPhone (Jonathan Ive) is BRITISH and a leading light of world design talentedness, so it's almost a patriotic duty to buy one. Or two. You could even start a c*******n.

Yup I'm sad (I watch Apple's keynote announcements) and the iphone looks great. Depending on the UK network and price, I'll be buying one..
