In Memorium
I have a couple of winners from when I started developing an interest in restoring older tools to usefulness. It all began as something I could do with my handicapped daughter as a hobby, so I really came at it blind and dumb. I had not clue one and did not know enough to realise it. My very favourite dog of a plane is a # 5 sized Stanleyalike from Ebay. Because of it's bailey based adjusting system, it really LOOKED like a plane in the photos. When it arrived I noticed the differences. Anything that could be stamped out was stamped out. The adjuster knob resembled nothing more than a beer cap with a tapped hole in it. Pure C#$@ from one end to the other. I could have cried in my beer , rather , I chose to laugh. I very carefully painted the main body a shiny reflective black and all the wood a lovely shiny fire engine red. Garish as a neon bit of graffiti.
Strangely , I found a use for it. It is my go to plane for removing construction adhesives from reclaimed wood.
weird how life works out eh.
