For Christmas my wife kindly bought me Andrew Crawford's Boxes book as a way to get me back into doing some woodwork. Well I have been out in the garage trying to make the first box in the book.
One of the things that I needed was a router table in order to cut the rebates on the end and bottom of the box, but I was not in a position to spend a couple of hundred on a table, or a couple of months making one, so I had to improvise:
The main part is an 18mm think veneered MDF shelf from a set of book cases I made a number of years ago (I made too many shelves and a couple have been sitting as scrap for a number of years). I cut out a circle for the cutter and two small countersunk holes for the screws to hold the router onto the underside of the board.
Not the most accurate thing in the world, but with one of the simple Trend depth gauges I was able to get it down to about 0.2mm with a bit work experimenting.
I will build a proper router table at some point. but first I need to get rid of the spare furniture that is currently clogging up the garage
