I am going to refurb my workshop a little at the end of next month. The roof needs doing, and whilst doing that I want to replace the window and block off the garage door (that is already blocked off by racking anyway).

The window does not need to open, so I was thinking about making a very simple frame from rebating 3x2, and machining a cill from something suitable. Does this sound feasible? It is 4ft x 2ft6, so is there a rule for how many panes this should be?

That's easily do-able in one pane. It's worth checking for safety glass zones. If it's below 800mm from the floor to the start of the glass, or if its next to a door for instance, it needs to be safety glass. Being a workshop, i'd probably plump for it anyway.

As for the frame, it's more about looks than anything else whether you want a transom in it to break it up a bit.

i think that i will go for safety glass or solid polycarb anyway. Whichever is more secure. It is only single glazed at the moment, but may as well do it properly.

If you decide to go for glass then laminated is probably a better bet than safety glass, just from a security viewpoint.

+ 1 for laminate. But make sure water can not get to edges or in a few years the film will start to go cloudy from the edge.

I fitted a sheet of polycarbonate as a shed window earlier in the year.
I'm happy with it, but if budget is a factor then the laminated glass was considerably cheaper to buy than the polycarbonate.

Yeah, should have said i had laminated in mind when i said safety glass, which is preferable to toughened in this instance, not least from a security viewpoint.
