Hi,

I am planning my new workshop and have been looking at the various methods that people have used to build the walls. I have settled on the following, from the inside out:

9mm Ply
Vapour barrier
4*2 frame filled with 90mm Rockwool slabs
Breathable membrame
20mm slats
16mm Shiplap.

All pressure treated.

However the shiplap is coming in at around £500 for the size of my workshop (4m * 4m). The back and one side of the workshop will be against fences / trees and cannot be seen so I wondered about using a cheaper material on these sides e.g. painted OSB3 or Ply.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

You could omit the internal vapour barrier, because the ply effectively does the same job.

Why don't you go for sawn feather-edge board instead, which I have no doubt is much cheaper? If you really wanedt to, you could then run your own rebate along the back of the bottom edge of the boards to get them all to sit flat.

Don't forget to apply at least one coat of your finish before fitting the boards....as they shrink you would see an undecorated stripe on each board if you do the lazy paint-in-situ-only thing.

Hi Mike,

Good point about the internal vapour barrier - I do recall someone saying due to the amount of glue in Ply it is essentially a barrier.

I will look at the cost of feather edge. I do like the look of shiplap though!

Very good point about the coating - I did the lazy option at my last house on some fence panels and they looked awful after a few months as they contracted and showed stripes!

I think I'd change 9mm ply to 12mm OSB. Much nicer to fix to. I painted mine with white masonry paint.

Thanks Wizer,

Many people have mentioned OSB inside and it seems 50/50 if people like the look or not. I may pop to Wickes and have a look at some since I have never actually used it before.

Whatever I use it will be painted white - seems to make a huge difference to the feel of the workshop

Once it's painted and you have stuff fixed to it, you won't even notice it. This is not a living room ;) One of my walls is pebble dashed!! (soon to be covered).

I am sure you are right Wizer - perhaps I am being too fussy.

Although when it is done I do hope to spend more time in it than my living room! :D

I used 12mm ply and then covered it with 12mm plasterboard :D
filled in all the edges and screw holes and now mine IS better than my living room :D :D

Its nice cos its easy to keep clean - Bright - and I can screw almost anything to it anywhere I want :D

I used shiplap on the outside and i think its worth it. I hate ugly old sheds that make the place look untidy :)

Hi Mike,

You have convinced me!

Shiplap all round, 12mm Ply and then plasterboard inside. I may even paint it magnolia and then it will be just like my living room :)

Plasterboard will also help with the sound proofing.

Thanks

My outbuilding is a similar size but I'm going for a tiled roof. Construction will be...

Boards
Battens
Membrane
Battens
12mm WBP plywood
4x4 frame with 2x4 studs

Haven't decided what to do on the inside but it probably won't be insulated as it's just for storing ride on mowers and the like.

If over 15sqm keep it >1m from site boundary and other buildings or it will need Building Control Approval. That complicates things a lot.
