I'm looking for a workshop dog, I would prefer a medium to big dog, used to have a Gordon setter but very hard work when young. Really just want something which does no more than wag and wander, any ideas. I have a six year old son, so child friendly.

Labrador?

Love kids esp the food they carry.

what about a greyhound????

lots around especially from the charity so you are helping rehome

don't need too much exercise either

Old English Sheepdog
Nothing better for keeping the six year old in line.
Cheers Mike

Not a Border Collie, mine hates the workshop, must be all the whistling of tools, great dog though, loves kids, and long, long walks.

Black labrador all the way, try to get one from working strain easily trained great with kids and an added bonus they pick up all the offcuts they just have to carry things all the time .

ex-racing greyhound - the most docile animals on the planet, and it stops them from being abused/killed when the stop racing. They really are lovely dogs - and they don't require a lot of running either despite the misconception.

Cairn terrier. Not too big so they don't get in the way, and not delicate or nervy. Just as happy rough-and-tumbling with the children or curled up in front of the fire. Happy to take as much exercise as you want to give them, but not so big that they need loads. Spirited little chaps - we lost ours at the age of 16 just recently and our 2 children referred to him as their "little brother"!

purely from a practical point of view, I would have thought a "working" type dog would be the more sensible. they are usually more tolerant of noise and disruption, than one or two of the more nervous types.
A border collie, may not be a good idea as these require loads of exercise are very lively when younger and can be a handful at times.
Labs are a good bet, I do agree there.

One serious point, rember that dogs hearing is much sharper than ours and some noises like routering can really effect them - fine if they grow up with it, but be gentle, eh?

Dogs are great, I take mine occasionally to the workshop, but do remember - especially when young to tether them, to avoid tripping on them and give then an area to know is theirs - I loves Tims hidy hole!

Good luck!

One clarifying question:

Are you talking about a workshop dog or a pet who would be happy in a workshop? Most of the dogs mentioned crave human company and would be pretty damn miserable if left alone in a run overnight. All big dogs are hard work when young - combination of energy and size!

Cheers

Tim

I have a boxer and for me they fulfil everything you expect from a dog. She is very loyal and friendly, absolutely loves children and is very happy to be with you wherever you are (they don't like to be left alone) I have taken her to work tons of times and she is never worried about it. (I am a cabinet maker)

They are a very intelligent dog too, the only downside (depending on how you look at it) is they love to play and never seem to grow out of that puppy phase of playfulness.

If you have a boxer, you will have boxers for life, they are very special.

Just to clarify, the dog will be with me during the day and at home in the evening, not left in the workshop.
Thanks for the suggestions, all will be investigated. Currently my wife is trying to adopt a labradoodle, i'll keep you all posted.
