Working out lathe speeds?

Although I was very surprised, I do believe you Chas, theres nothing like someone who has actually done it and reported back. I will be looking for an opportunity to try it myself some time. Thinking about the ON/OFF, wont a bulb supplied with 50Hz electricity actually heat and cool 100 times per second? (1/2 sine wave each direction per cycle)
