Hello

I am planning a Jewellery box and want to use Brusso hinges. I have designed to box to have 10mm sides. Then I noticed the first hinge set on this site?

http://www.classichandtools.com/acatalo ... russo.html

Dimensions here

http://www.classichandtools.com/acatalog/pdf_JB-101.pdf

I can't work out what the ideal timber thickness is. It says that the overall hinge width is 0.485 inches which I assume is about 12.5mm So does that mean I need to go thicker than that? 14mm ?

Am I likely to find hinges for 10mm? Or is that too small?

Any help appreciated.

and while I am at it. Am I likely to find brusso quality hinges in something like stainless steel/chrome ?

Hi there Wizer,
I've just bought a pair of quadrant stay hinges from Rutlands (code C1355 in their Cabinet Hardware catalogue) for a trinket box I'm in the process of making for my daughter.
I looked at the small Brusso hinges and I figured they'd be too wide for my 12.7 mm thick box sides. I didn't think I'd be able to successfully recess them without them breaking out of the box back side (if you get my drift :) ).

The long hinge arms on the quadrant hinges are 7.4 mm wide and 2 mm thick so I will have 2.5mm clearance either side of the hinge.
The short hinge arms are 11.2 mm from the knuckle to the edge so this gives me 1.5 mm of wood at the back of them, this is marginal but I think I should be OK. Other salient dimensions are in the catalogue.
The screw holes are countersunk and take an imperial size#2 screw.

Rutlands have some other butt box hinges on sale but the smallest seems to be 11 mm wide, I'm not sure if this dimension relates to the width of a single leaf or the hinge width when opened at 180 degrees.

As for chrome/stainless steel I didn't come across any when I was searching the web for jewellery box hinges. I do remember reading on a jewellery box maker's website about him sending his brass hinges off to get them silver plated 8) . I think I found the link through the Classic Hand Tools website. I'll have to look for it again as I fancied buying the box makers' book he was selling.

Hope this helps
Cheers
Dave

Wizer I made this mistake, the dimension you need to look at is 0.306 which is about 7.6mm this how far you need to set the hinge in, if you set it in any more than that the hinge will not open as they are square to allow the to stop at 95 degs.

Morning Tom - the hinge is inset from the centre of the pin to the edge of the leaf...this distance is normally set with a gauge. In other words the centre of the pin is in line with the outside face of the box...that's why there's always a chunk of brass overhanging. The minimum thickness of timber for this sort of hinge would be 12mm IMO, 10mm is going to be a tad on the thin side - Rob

Thanks everyone. After I posted I did a bit of research and worked some things out. I'm not sure I like the idea of those hinges poking out the back of the box and I couldn't find a pic to show me what it would look like installed. I'd really like to keep the timber thickness quite thin to make it more 'delicate'. I found that brusso make a stop hinge that is intended to be routed into the back of the box which might be a bnit easier for me considering I have never installed hinges before. The snag is that if I want stainless steel I have to order from abroad and sell my first born to pay for it. Still, I think SS will look nicer and a little more modern.

It's a shame we don't have more choice over here. I wonder if it might be cheaper to find someone over here to make them for me? Maybe even make a quantity.

Here's a couple of pics of what they look like sticking out the back, which personally I like the look of.

I'll measure the size of the chop out for the hinge on these and post it for you later (these are JB-102's).

Cheers, Ed

Thanks Ed, they are very nice. I'll consider them. I think the 102's are going to be too big. If I up the thickness to 12mm, as Rob suggests, then I should be ok with the 101's.

They are lovely and look very well made. It's a shame the website doesn't do metric dimensions though for us converts!

The size of the rebate for the hinge is 32mm X 8mm, at 2mm depth.

The sides of both of these boxes were 14mm, which seemed to work OK.

Hope that helps,

Ed

Thanks for that Ed, I'll have to have a think, not sure if 14mm is going to look right.
