Hi all,

Well we had our first woodturning blub meeting last night, great turnout of around 30 people, so looks like we are well on the way to becoming a Chapter of the Irish Guild.

More news on that to follow.

After discussing club policy, we had our first demo.

The demonstrator created very nice textured bowl. These are Oak, trued, carved with an grinder, textured with wire, burned, sprayed, waxed, and are fabulous. They have the look of something 100 years older.

The Finished Bowl,

I went along to a club open-day and they told me they didn't want new members. The other relatively close one meets on Sunday mornings when I have other comitments. I hope yours goes well, it sounds like you have got off to a great start.

I don't think I'd want to argue with your demonstrator  The bowls look so much better when seen held, you get a better sense of proportion.

Andy

Hi Andy
I thought that was the point of `Open days` to attract new members.
I wouldn`t want to be a member of a club like that anyway. One day they`ll need new members. :x
Regards
Steve

Steve's right.... if its 'dead men's shoes', then its their loss not yours.
That sort of mindset "sucks", and there's no place for it.
That sort of mentality belongs to the archetypal Golf Club Brigade.

Start your own !
If they knocked you back Andy, you'll not be the first, and not the last.
How hard could it be ? - it's not rocket science, starting and running a club, regardless of the 'subject' involved.

With the right passion and commitment from two or three people to drive something onwards, its eminently achievable.
A saying involving 'Bull' & 'By its Horns' springs to mind... Start your own and make it a bit more 'friendly' than whatever it was that held an 'open-day'.
You may be very pleasantly surprised how much assistance is available both 'officially' and from un-official sources too. :D
Come up with 3 Good reasons why not !!

Good luck Bud.. and don't let that kind of narrow-minded nonsense deter you in any shape or form 8) 8)

Loz - Sorry, went "off on one" a bit there... looking Good my friend !!
Is this new club something that you have involvement in getting off the ground ? Either way... that has to be something extremely positive and encouraging... from a start of 30, thats only going to grow and flourish... brilliant, something to be very proud of your involvement in. Nice one. 8) 8) 8) 8)

HIYA LOZ, Thats great to get into a club you can learn so much by having a chat with other members. That was a great Demo. looks real good. Want to have the insurance policy checked before trying.
I'm a member of The Dolman Chapter affiliated to the IWTA It is named after a rock formation which is the largest in Europe over one hundred tons on the outskirts of Carlow. A bit of history thrown in for good measure.
As a Member of the IWTA you are given the meeting times and places of every Chapter in the association and if you are their area on meeting Day/Night you are welcome to attend. It's a great idea if you happen to live in the right area. I have 5 Chapters in a 25mls radius I live on the borders of 5 counties, So if anyone is comeing to Ireland let me know and I can give you info. of where you can visit and get A CEAD MILEA FAILTE .
