Woodstain for exterior cladding

Can I ask the assembled members on here what they would recommend as a finish for softwood cladding round a hardwood dormer window. I intend to replace the cladding around my dormer and in the long distant past I used hicksons decor. is there a better make out there to stain and protect the new cladding and the window frame
