Well, depending exactly which day your visit is, if you want something woody, why not try the most complete fifteenth century vessel ever found? Not the Mary Rose, but the Newport Ship. It's run by volunteers so is not open every day (and there might be insufficient tourists in December, but what do I know?)

Not far away, you can visit a very rare Transporter Bridge - admittedly this is steel not wood, but there are only six in the world still in operation and it's pretty cool. It's the longest span transporter bridge in the world, according to Wikipedia. If you ever played with Meccano, you'll like it.

If you want something indoors, or at least partly under cover, nip up the motorway to the National Museum of Wales at St Fagans. https://museum.wales/stfagans/

It's part way through a multi-million refit, with a big new gallery celebrating the craft heritage of Wales. It houses a huge collection of furniture and domestic items. Some are in galleries, many are in reconstructed historic buildings. You'll need more than a day, but it's open every day, has a great cafe and admission is free.

In newport now. Overnighting at the ibis and going to the passport office in the morning, then four hours to kill before collecting the new one. Westwood looks possible tomorrow thanks.
After four hours traipsing around shopping malls and retail parks today, she owes me.

The transporter bridge is an old favourite of mine, I used to drive all over s. wales before I left the country in a marked manner We could see the superstructure from the passport office. Had to go through more security to get into the office than most airports. 5 beefy security guards and a full handbag search for the mrs. Twice! because I had to go back 4 hours later to collect it.Somewhat overkill I thought.

Tried to get to the wentwood place, but the roads got very narrow and hilly and the snow was falling off the trees above us, and the mrs (who was driving) got very aeriated and we had to turn back. But it was only to look as I cant take any wood back with me.

Off to yandles tomorrow.

Having suggested Isca to Bob, I got to thinking I should visit to see what they have in stock - I called both numbers, one not recognised and the other went to someone else's mobile.
Does anyone know if he's still trading?
