The sole flattening arrangement you set up would be worth an article in itself Rob !

Cheers, Paul. :D

Just had a look at the 'Seats in the House' article...have a look at the price of the 'Waterfall Chair' from Martin Grierson's 'shop...   - Rob

This latest edition is really first class - lots of very interesting articles - the Andrew Varth feature on his Infinity Models is mind blowing, excellent piece on bandsawing, the detail Robert Ingram goes to for drilling holes is just incredible, nice to see some prices of actual works - I could go on and on.
If you do not already subscribe it's well worth getting this one! :)

I too would second the opinion that the magazine is on the up. I generally read the magazines for inspiration and this issue did the trick. I am quite interested in finishing as it is a dark at to me.
I personally prefer a really detailed look at one subject rather that a skim over of a broad topic. Articles such as the drilling info while not easy reading are very usefull.
I was so inspired by the display of work I bought the bespoke book which is fantastic. I would reccommend it to anybody for ideas.

Anyone care to give me a clue - I'm not a subscriber, finding the mag (normally) a bit too "router and jig" centric for my tastes.

BB - the emphasis in the mag is changing quite perceptibly under the leadership of the new ed Michael Huntley. I think if you had a dip into this issue you might be pleasantly surprised, lots of good stuff. There's more of a slant towards hand tool topics f'instance and a gradual leaning away from continuous testing of high end, tres expensive machinery, though that still does occur, but there's less of it - Rob

I've just signed up for a 12month subscription - been meaning to do it for a while now, and this thread has got me into gear.

Looking forward to reading your article Rob.

Karl - let us know what your thoughts on the mag once you've had a read - Rob

Rob - first copy arrived in yesterdays post, and a good read it was too.

Particularly enjoyed the drilling tuition by RI, and of course the plane making by yourself! I had been considering making my dad a plane for Xmas (or maybe two - one each). On the lookout for some nice timber, and then i'll have a go. May even post on here if it turns out ok !

The furniture pieces were of high quality - some interesting design features and uses of timber (reclaimed elm floorboards, and that ripple olive ash has an interesting look).

Looking forward to next edition already.

Cheers

Karl - the beauty of adding a separate sole is that you can look round for an oddment of interesting, pleasant timber for the main body and then find a little bit of something harder for the sole...bubinga might be and option here but there are plenty of others. This of course keeps the cost down quite a lot, which is always an advantage. Glad you enjoyed the mag and my article...one of the three planes in the last shot was made by a 'man who knows'...JK himself, and it's signed if you look closely, not that it's any sort of a gloat :^o ...moi?.. never been known to happen  - Rob

Rob - thanks for explaining the link between the photo and "the man who knows". I originally thought you were touting your own planes! What would Philly say!

I am quite looking forward to making one - going to do a HNT A55 style smoother. Like this one. I think the brasswork will be the biggest obstacle. Never done any.

Cheers

Karl
