Having purchased a stack of wood from Martyn and BSM very kindly converting it into easier to handle planks and shorter bowl blank section (the off cuts going as firewood in a barter) I am left with quite a lot of wood.

I need to build a wood sore as this is a) cuttering up the shop and b) the subject of a order from SWIMBO that I can't aquire anymore wood until I've tidied up the wood I've got!

The store will be in the garage and for mainly seasoned wood (though some of the Fiddle Back needs a little longer apparently).

Initial design as below using 3x3" timber and spur shelving.

This is something i need to do as well. I thought about getting something welded up though. Pretty hard to make something out of wood that will hold the weight of the wood without making brackets that will impede the wood on the lower shelves.

I'M using spur shelving mounted on wooden uprights as I have to span a garage door space. These will be bolted to the floor and somewhere at the top.

Hopefully 3x3 or maybe 2x4 as Tom is suggesting, will take the load!

I'm not familiar with spur shelving. Do you have a link that would help explain this? It would be nice to build my own instead of getting a welder to do so. Thanks

i've got a million and 1 of cuts of 1 1/2" box section, hopefully one day put them to good use and make a timber rack. better than standing all my boards on end in a corner, and when i go to get a bit it all falls over!

ohhh noo - you must take imediate action then mate - not least because we've still got that ash butt to process and pick up ;)

Too right - hence actually getting on with it :)

Having responded to a query last week around wood shelving I realised I'd never updated this thread - hence here is a brief update

Making up the base - on saw horses shimmed with tiles and things to ensure that the base is level. Some issues presented by the warped nature of one of the pieces!

Base in place and secured to the floor with brackets and screws in rawl plugs (I tried expanding anchors but they were a bloody disaster). Base was shimmed up to be level on the floor and then the brackets hold it in place.

The wood store blocks the garage door (double garage) so I filled the gap behind it with expanding foam - stopping water ingress. So that the foam does not damage the door should I ever want to remove it I taped cling film over the door and door mechanism.

Then the top beam went in and the vertical elements spanned the space between the base and the top beam. Initially (see thread above) I agonised over the joints to be used here. Finally I decided to lash it together with big metal brackets as these are faster

When I opened the metal spur shelving one of the uprights was slightly bent and scratched - it had obviously had a hard life, however the supplier replaced it no quibbles and with no extra postage cost. I screwed the metal uprights on with ruddy great screws and then slotted the spurs on, job done.

The funny wooden stubs sticking out half way up support the sheet goods.

Very happy :)

That looks good, Miles. Though, it's certainly not full yet, is it - time to buy some more wood now, I think!! :D

You gave me an idea Miles...

I just put up some spur shelving for my timber. As I have to use the garage door to access the shop, I can't put my 'Spur' uprights onto battens. There's too little space for wide shelves and they would foul the door movement.

If I put my timber rack at the far end though, I could build like this. I would sink the Spur uprights into a groove though, to get around the problem of the gap behind the shelves, caused by the upright. Easier than cutting the shelves around them.

Thanks... I now have a move around to see to!

Regards... John

Ebay, those Elm blanks people are talking about on the spinny side!?!?!!!?
I may take some of those, mind you I have a lump of elm which I will turn first (which may take a few weeks with the other two bowls that I'm working on) before I decide to buy a load of it. I was very taken with someone's elm burr on here though...
