Hi all. im new here... I have recently been making chopping boards as a hobby and have discovered wood turning while looking for a CNC machine on the internet.

Im interested in making Vase, Bowls and lamp stands of a good size. firstly id much appreciate some advice on a beginners lathe. usual ebay search finds the 200£ type ones for new however the clearance (if thats the word) doesnt seem enough to get a decent log onto the chuck.

i have been looking at old machines but most seem 3 phase which i dont have at home.

Secondly, a decent supplier of logs. i dont really want to buy the pre cut shapes.

hi mordzy
does not have to be a problem you can get a converter from 3 phase to 240, it can be handy as you can make it variable speed change or you can change the motor as i did, but if i did it again i would go converter route

as for logs, find your local tree surgeon for starters, and let it be known that you are a turner to friends and colleagues.

thanks for the tips. i did look at a phase convertor and they seem rather expensive. 300+

would it not make more sense to go 240v?

i have been looking at machine mart for phase convertors.
