Wood Identification Required

Hi all,

Hoping for a wood ID. The pictured is 3’x6”x4”. Very heavy for its dimensions. When cut is very fragrant. Splinters really do sting and easy to pick up.

Any help required.

That looks like pitch pine.

The fact that it is 'Heavy', 'Scented' and 'splinters' points very much to Pitch Pine.

'Scented' and 'splinters' also could be Larch. I have some Siberian Larch that looks very much like this. It's also very hard, about as hard as Oak.

Always take a close up photo of the end grain which will help.That is like a finger print of the tree

That doesn't work with softwoods. You need a microscope.

Hi all,

To avoid posting my own thread about a similar topic. (Sorry Mark for hijacking your thread!) Would anyone be happy and able to identify these wood samples that I've collected?

The longer narrow one at the bottom I suspect is Teak as it seems 99% accurate to another Teak they I have.

I suspected the larger one on the left to be sapele but I'm doubting that I'm right.

No idea with the small darker one.

Any help is massively appreciated.

The first piece you're holding is Iroko, I'm not certain what the dark one is but it could be African Blackwood, the bottom one is hard to say without a closer photograph as it looks more like Sapele or Utile than Teak.

I've looked at the wood database a few times but it blows my mind when trying to pick out woods, theres a lot of varieties that are described to be very similar.
