Don't think it was ever a commode. The chamber pot usually lifted out from the top with them (they were still just in use in some cottages "when I were a lad"!). The chairs with a drawer like that are usually labelled "nursing chairs" or nursery chairs, and the drawer was used for nappies etc.

The whole thing is very much in the style of the furniture that was made around my homeland on the Welsh border - we still have a tallboy that is so similar in style it could be by the same guy. :D
