I've been given this from some packaging ...

Any ideas what it might be?

The shavings from turning or planing have an unpleasant smell.

Not sure - I can see the similarity with iroko,but I've had similar reclaimed timber that had a vinegar-like smell when cut and worked,which I've never had with bought iroko blanks.

I asked for that.

It is a bit like vinegar Andrew. I fitted some louvre doors in the seventies which had a similar smell when planed.

As far as a clue goes, I'm clueless hpl.
