When I bought my Record lathe second hand I was given around 20 bits of timber with it for spindle turning. Unfortunately the guy that sold it to me couldn't remember what it was...

The pic below shows two different bits, with the bit on the right definitely being more yellow than that on the left. I've cut one of the left hand bits into pen blanks, one of which can be seen on top. The timber is quite red in colour, but the old (uncut) surfaces have a definite grey tinge to them (as can faintly be seen on the top surface of the blank piece).

...and the right-hand piece!

And finally, I found this written on one end of another piece that looks to be a different grain structure to the red bit shown above, but a similar colour. I can't make out what it says though!

Can anyone help to identify any of the above?

The writing says 'Calophyllum' - probably Calophyllum brasiliense a.k.a. Jacareuba (Brazilian) or Santa Maria (Central America).

I've not used it but just had a look in The Handbook of Hardwoods (HMSO) which describes it as pink-brick red in colour. It also says it has interlocked grain and can cause severe blunting so good luck with your turning!
