I got hold of an old Victorian headboard with inlaid panels and took it to pieces to see what I could salvage. I thought the frame would have been some sort of softwood but it doesn't seem to be when I try the thumbnail test. Any ideas what this is, as being used to working with pallets, pine or redwood I haven't got a clue. The dowel in the second photo is pine I think!

It might be Spanish Cedar, related to mahogany and rather lighter in both colour and density. I have (had) a Victorian wardrobe, mainly mahogany but some Spanish Cedar side members of frames.
Plane the end grain and show us the face grain for a better diagnosis.
If it is Spanish Cedar it's hard to come by. Not especially decorative but good for when you want a lighter alternative to Mahogany.
Excellent for acoustic guitar necks if you ever want to make one.

Seeing as it felt hard with the thumbnail test then it's likely mahogany.
