Just need to think of some projects to use the remaining 12 or so planks of Iroko up.

You could always donate some to me???

seriously though what a fantastic transformation, from baffles in a sh*t tank to a table! well done sir! =D>

Thanks, but it is only wood after all. It's a bit like shallow Hal, you need to look beneath the surface.

Not Sh*t, Clean untreated water (from an Impounding Reservoir) different type of Treatment Works. The baffles were in a flocculation tank (mixing tank) where the chemicals that are used as part of the process to clean the water to make it safe to drink are mixed together.

You obviously knew the origin of these planks, so they were OK. I once nearly did a very silly with some pitch pine that had come out of a tannery. It was only after wondering how to clean off the surface that the phrase "Chrome leather" came to mind. Putting some chips through one of the lab analysers showed they had more than 20% chromium in them. NOT something to breathe in.
So it's always a good idea to think before using reclaimed timber :?

Looks fantastic, beautiful work and lovely wood, It'll only get more beautiful as the wood darkens with age.

Nicely done and well done on the recycling! :)

Nic.

Cheers.

Bit of an update, I damaged the top when I was over zealous with the insertion of my machine screws and punched a hole through it. So I am now in the process of making another top. I did glue the breakout back down and fill the hole but I still know its there and won't be happy with it until it is replaced.

Nice to know I'm not the only one that gets obsessive about things nobody else will ever see! :)

PS: How many copies of Lord of the Rings do you need?

Don't ask, I bought a set and received a set as a present, my Grandson had 2 sets for Christmas a couple of years ago, I also bought an extended set. So, somehow I ended up with 4 sets. Why do you want one?

Haha, thanks but no. Absolutely loved the book and the first film gave me goosebumps a few times with the accuracy of some of the scenes... Seeing Gollum in his cave on screen looking exactly as he had in my mind when I read the book was a singularly stunning experience.

I really didn't like the "Harry Potter-ization" of all the scenes with wizards in them tho. Magic went from a (mostly) subtle use in the books to blatant Hollywood sfx. All in all, fantastically done, but seeing it once was enough ;)

I'm more of a bookworm than a movie watcher (unless I'm really poorly and can't concentrate - then I'm glued to a screen!), so if you're into LOTR type fantasy and stuff, drop me a message if you're looking for reading material, I may be able to give you some decent leads for good stuff!

PM sent to Nic above.

Here are some boards and slats I have planed, cut and sanded to 180g that I have machined (from same Iroko stockpile as previously shown).

These are for a 3 seater Garden Bench. The bench ends are Antique Cast Iron Ends and I have stripped them back to base metal before coating them with 2 coats of Hammerite hammered finish (black). All the fittings for it that have been purchased are 316 Stainless Steel.

I am hoping to have it finished by the end of the week as it is a present for my Mother and Father in-Law.

They were sanded with my (new to me) Festool Rotex RO125 (great bit of kit, but has a large learning curve), 60g Rot/Orb, 100g Rot/Orb and 180g Rot/Orb. They have all had one coat of Sikkens Cetol HLS plus stain (mahogany).

Over the next 4 days they will then be given 4 light coats of Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 (mahogany) for the finish. (thanks to RogerM for his external finishes thread), here external-iroko-osmo-uv-oil-or-sikkens-cetolfilter-7-plus-t59500.html

Completed Bench, delivered to In-laws and bolted in situ. Iroko looks stunning (better in real life), each coat was de-nibbed when dry with 0000 wire wool. All fasteners are 316 Stainless steel.

Plaque reads to Dave and Val in memory of Bert (FIL's Brother) and Marjorie (MIL's Mother) who sadly left us in 2014

Not great image quality as my Daughter took it on her camera phone, but a good memory image.
