Folks,

I am looking for two double glazed window units for a new workshop.

I'm looking for ones about 2 feet square or there abouts, obviously for a workshop they don't need to be in mint condition but if you have a couple of that kind of size I'll part with good money for them.

I'm in Cambridgeshire so would need to be no more than an hour or two travel.

Failing that, has anyone had any success at reclamation yards or seconds from window manufacturers?

I've been at my local recycling centre a few times and asked the guy to keep a look out for a couple for me but as yet no success.

Much appreciated

Hi,

Try the local double glazing firms for mis-measured of damaged ones.

freecycle is your freind for this - i asked on our local group when i was building cold frames a while back and got loads of offers

Sorry for the Hijack but,

If I wanted to build my own windows how do I go about getting the DG units in the sizes I want? Do I just go to my local Glaziers and they make them up or is it a bit more complicated than that?

Sorry again to the OP.

you can order them direct from supliers like pilkington - but if you only want a couple tapping up a freindly double glazing firm or buying/freecycling second hand upvc and stripping the units out might work out more cost effective

Hi,

have you tried your local council recycling centre? I have seen upvc dg windows at the yards in Kettering and Leamington Spa. The asking prices seem to vary at the whim of the manager. Most I saw were bigger than 2' sq. I never found ones to suit me but I did want specific sizes. My recollection is that none were very expensive.

Regards

i think i may have a few measured wrong cockups in the workshop so will check the sizes for you.

The cost of having a couple made up though should not be too much from a selaed unit manufacturer about £10 a unit for a 600x600 unit i would think if you dont need K glass.

cheers

jon

Many thanks for the response fellas.

I have been to the recycling centre near me a couple of times. The site manager usually leaves things like doors and windows out for "customers" to take away. I didn't ask what was the going rate but I was under the impression they could go to a good home for free??

I have never heard of free recycle, I will give them a go. The workshop isn't built yet so no real exact window dimensions required, just thought something of around 2' square would be good but anything considered.

Thanks again for the assistance

I would be surprised if Pilkington even entertained the man on the street - would have thought you'd need to be an account customer.

Just search on Yell.com for glass suppliers (or similar) and ring a few, asking for

- the cost of a nominal 600x600 DG unit - so you can compare,
- if they make the units in house or order them,
- can they do ones with laminated\toughened, etc.,
- turnaround
- can they argon fill?

That'll soon put you in the picture.

My local firm has a rapid turnaround - last lot were laminated\toughened D\G units - were ready to collect 2 working days later, and they do everything in house.

I have quite a few units laying around if you want them.
You are welcome to have them for free but you are quite a trek from hear and postage may be expensive!

I have them ranging from about 18" square to about 5'x7' Which are VERY heavy!

Thanks for your kind offer oakfield, are you in a particular rush to get rid of them? you are unfortunately a good distance away so will investigate sources closer to home for the time being.

If you don't mind and still have them nearer the summer when I plan to build I may take you up on your offer. If you find another home for them in the meantime so beit.

Many thanks
