Popped over to see my tree surgeon friend over the weekend and noticed this log sticking out of the pile.
I was told it was Willow, but not Weeping Willow.
The end of the log was a deep red brown colour, which was what attracted me to it.
This log is heavy and seems more dense than the Weeping Willow i had in the past?,which was also a lot lighter in weight and colour?
After reading some of the posts about Willow and the varying types i thought i would take it just to try.
This is the trunk section and is about 10" dia.
Just wondering if anyone else had had any Willow like this. :?:

Looks like willow. Medium brown heartwood with a lot of pale straw coloured sapwood with not much figure. It's probably heavy because it's wet.

The other willow i had before was a bigger trunk than this about 18" dia, which had just been cut down the day i picked it up and was a lot lighter,in weight, and you could see the straggly fibres on the end.It had also been growing by a stream.
This log was cut down in someones garden with no river or stream in sight, apparently :?:

I have turned tons of willow and that log is grey or crack willow and grows like a weed Where I live in Wales with the damp climate it grows quite profusely and and is almost regarded as a pest. Willow is a very underrated wood for turning , has interesting colour, grain, strength to weight properties and takes colouring and pyrography very well.

I have a lot of willow in my log basket. Not sure I'd turn it. Very oily. Cracks when it dries.

I'll try turning some of what's left as an experiment.
