Hi,

at last I'd like to get round to buying a visor and some ear muffs. I seem to come across more and more situations where I feel I'm going to get hit in the face. The only problem is that I'd like to use my dust mask as well (a trend airace). The axminster visor looks good and cheap but has no ear protection built in.

Has anybody got any recommendations?

Cheers,

Dave

I dont think theres many visors which will allow enough room for your airace aswell- you could wear saftey specs but i've lost count of the amount of times i would have been hit on my forehead if i hadnt of had a full face visor on- so you really need a full face imo

Unless you are a chatter work specialist I don't think ear protection is a must for turning. If you really want to go down that route, you could consider some in-ear plugs. Drop me your address on a PM if you like and I will send you a pair as I have loads (new of course!)

I'm really looking for a complete workshop solution. I can't remember why I last used ear plugs on the lathe but it was fairly recently. I also have a habit of getting myself all geared up for one task and staying that way for the rest of my workhsop session.

Simon, cheers for the offer of the ear plugs. I've got plenty and use them all the time. I was just hoping to replace them with something that will last a little longer.

For 7 quid I think I'll go with the axminster visor and just buy another one if I see anything better.

Cheers,

Dave

HI Dave

Did you know you can get a visor to fit the airace, it goes in the grove on the top of the mask.

One thing I dont like about it is that it is open at the top so you can end up with shavings going over the top of it and resting against your face/eyes. Also I am not sure how much protection it would offer if something came of the lathe and hit it as it has no frame.

The yellow Axminster mask does works with the airace as I used to use it before I got an air fed mask. The only problem is that as it wont go flat over your face as designed over the mask it can sometimes give a wierd perspective.

We got one of the 7 quid Axminster ones, it is perfectly reasonable and does the job. As I wear glasses it has the huge advantage of not steaming them up. Also at that price I do not feel bad about taking it out to use with the strimmer in the garden ;)

I tend to wear ear defenders all the time (whilst in the turning), plus a pair of custom fit ear plugs so I can listen to the radio or mp3s. The main reason is so that I can leave my ambient dust filter on all the time and it's very loud. Things get even louder when I switch on the extractor. Putting on ear defense from the start is just easier.

I also wear my JSP power cap so the ear defenders have to be worn with the strap under my chin. It's an odd look!!

Dave,

If you buy the Axminster one be very careful of the plastic studs with the screw threads on, I bought one on Friday and while I was putting it together one of the studs snapped, I just received a new one complete visor from Axminster this morning.

Regards

Steve :)
