Apologies if this topic has already been discussed, but, well, I couldn't be bothered to trawl through all the searches  and I know how we all love to talk about planes. So...

The festive season is coming and I have the opportunity to add a new plane to the fleet, this time I think I'd benefit from a scraper plane as I have a few projects lined up that will involve difficult grained wood.

Any road, been having a look around and the choices seem to be between a LN 85 - very bling bling and has the ability to scrape right up to its edge; LN 112 - just the one bling this time, but very nice; or the Veritas version the LV 112, less bling but perhaps more function over form.

All look nice and all probably do a very good job, but I'm after the one that will perform best so any views gratefully accepted. Like the idea of the option to add some bow to the blade on the LV to help reduce the introduction of ridges and lines, but don't know if practically it's better or not.

Thanks all - Damian

I have the small LN 212 bronze scraper, which is a block plane sized scaper plane. Its very handy for dealing with small problem areas, but unsuitable for big surfaces.

I plan to add a full size scraper soon and will be going for the LV one.

Cheers, Ed

Hi -

You should have another choice for a scraping plane smaller than the 112, sometime around the end of February... 8)

Can't (welll... won't) say too much about it, but it will scrape tight to a vertical surface... least, that's what I remember

Cheers -

Hi Damian,

I have the Veritas and think it's a real cracker. I use it with the thin blade which can be bowed as well as tilted. Here's a table top in oak which I cleaned up entirely with the scraper plane

I wouldn't be without it now. I also have the Veritas #80 style scraper which is good for smaller work.

Thoroughly recommended :)

Cheers

Hi Damian

I have both the LN 85 and the LN 112. I prefer the 85.

The 85 is slightly shorter in length (but not much), but feels much nicer to work with. It has a 2" wide blade (easier to sharpen!) as opposed to the 2 7/8" blade of the 112.

As you have pointed out, it also has a "rebate" style blade, along with tilting handles, meaning that you can scrape right into corners of a workpiece should you so wish. Not that I ever have.

I also have the Veritas 80, excellent little plane. But I am also keeping my eye on e-bay for a LN 212. Or maybe leave a little note in SWMBO's handbag around Xmas time. Or maybe my Secret Santa is reading..........

Don't have any experience of the large Veritas scraper.

HTH

Cheers

Karl

You see, you think you have a relatively simple choice and then there are all these contradictory views and to top it off a swine plane maker hoves into view dangling future treats in front of you :D

Thanks all for the replies, lots of food for thought and I'll have to think about how it will be used most. LV planes are very well thought out and work well (thanks Paul), but I like the idea of being able to plane flush with the LN 85. However, tonight I could have used this rumoured new LV plane when cleaning up a messy glue up against a leg. Tell me more Rob, GIVE!

That sounds interesting and might be an excuse to get another plane, my birthday is in January after all....
