Which SCMS for workshop use?

Following on from my RAS repair thread, I'd like to ry and dowbselect an SCMS option.

I'd like one that can take a 10" blade since I already have some, other than that I'm flexible. Accuracy is my most important requirement, I want very good repeatability and accuracy to be able to crosscut and mitre hardwoods etc.

Will to spend up to around 500 for the right saw. Less would be better!

Makita LS 1013. Superb saw if you can get one. Not sure if the more up-to-date models are any better.

+ one for the Makita LS1013, very accurate, I mitre picture frames and only very rarely have to trim with the guillotine, but according to what I have read on here, the Festool Kapex is supposed to be as good and is currently available, but we are talking £800.00 for the 120mm version and it will take up to a 260mm blade.

Thanks, the current version seems to be the LS1018L which isn't that dear at all. I'm going to have a bash at stripping my Dewalt today to see what can be done, otherwise I'll flog it and invest in the Makita I expect!

The LS1013 is an old model and as with all things, time seems to bring lots of change's, (Accountants Arghhhh) so can't vouch for the accuracy of the LS1018L, but I am sure there must be a thread on here somewhere that will allude to its accuracy.

I cleaned up a Dewalt dw 1251 last week and it seems pretty straight forward. I'm sure you have more experience in the fixing up of tools but if you want rid of it I know a guy...... Haha
What's the issue with it?

I've had an LS1018 (the new version of the LS1013) for a few years now and am very pleased with it. Enormous capacity for a 10" machine and bob on accuracy once set up. Laser is pants though but I think they all are.

I did a fair bit of research a few months back when I replaced my LS1013 (which is a pretty good unit if you can get a good one). New Makitas seem to have a QA issue - get a good one then great but its not as guarranteed as it was. Otherwise the Kapex and Bosch glide seem to get top honours for accuracy - they're both expensive as hell though. The new Dewalts seem to be well thought of.

As I'm trying to improve my skills and get precise with my joints etc, I've now started getting a bit obsessive over accuracy, and the small amount of play present before now bothers me. It'll just be play in bearings etc but I'm tempted to replace outright.

Thanks for all the comments, worrying about the Makita QA issue but I'll read up and see if it's something I could check for as soon as I get it, and return if I don't like it.

If you are obsessive over accuracy as you say don't even think about replacing your ras with a scms just spend the most frustrating day of your life setting up and servicing the ras and it will give you years of accurate service.

Ive been using a new Makita and Dewalt recently and the Makita isn't square. The Dewalt has been pretty good. It was around £500 but I can't remember the model.

Now my experience is exactly the opposite, the Makita LS1013 in my workshop is perfectly accurate, but the DeWalt in the shed is hardly ever used due to not being square, vagaries of a production line I suppose.

Yeah I guess so. Both the Makita and the DeWalt are under a year old. I'll try and get the models

Dewalt is the 717 and I think the Makita is LS1018 - but I've not been using it due to its accuracy.
