which lathe??

Hi guys,

i am looking at getting myself a midi lathe i have been looking at the axminster http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-ax ... rod781208/
which seems really good value for money but at the same time am just wondering if thehttp://www.axminster.co.uk/jet-jet-j ... rod801450/
is really worth the extra £350 ??
or can anyone suggest anything else

i have had a cl3 but have now got rid because after 3 new tailstocks the centres just wouldnt line up which meant i was stuck with turning bowls and i found the round bars annoying and i just fancy somthing a bit smaller with a flat bed.

what do you all think any imput would be greatfully recieved

Just a small point to be aware of, I wasn't and found out later. I have a Jet 1642, a great lathe for sure, but one day I dragged the end around to allow for turning from the end of the bed, later when I moved the headstock back up the bed I noticed that the tailstock was well out of alignment, I was totally puzzled, it turns out though that despite the heavy cast iron bed and stand, it can in fact twist, the way to realign is to adjust the feet to remove the twist in the bed, who would have thought something so apparently rigid could move?

So if you do get a flatbed type, bear this in mind when setting it up.

Hi Lee,
The two lathes have different specifications. The first is rated as "Hobby" and the second as "Trade".

These descriptions are detailed in the Axminster catalogue if you hve it (or download one from here... http://www.axminster.co.uk/page/contact_request/ ) but essentially the trade product has significantly better quality that the hobby product.

That's what you are paying the extra money for.

I bought a well second hand Poolewood, and the only thing stopping the head and tail stocks aligning was............yes, you've guessed it!......the aligning pin on the headstock!
