Its got to be an LN, cause I liked to have a set. Primarily to be used on oak, doing fine edge jointing over 2m edges. What's the verdict?

The longer, the better, if you can afford it... Particularly on something over 2m long. I doubt the low angle plane would be of much benefit on oak, unless the grain's changing direction. But, for future use, there are many other timbers (even something like ash) where the grain can be problematic and that's where the low cutting angle comes in, to reduce tearout.

As I haven't used one though, I'd still wait for an opinion from someone who has, just in case. They may have a very good reason to go for a Veritas (?), or something. :)

And the most expensive :D

I haven't had any troubles with tearout from my No4 1/2 on oak so I think normal angle would be good.

A no8 it is then if needs must.

I haven't used the LN 7. I had (and sold) a LN 7 1/2. I haven't used a LN 8, but I have refurdished (and sold) a Bedrock No8.

My 2 cents

The No 8 is a monster. Substantial heft, and a longer sole for nice flattening.

The 7 1/2 is good. The blade angle can easily be changed to deal with any tearout. But the adjustable mouth is pretty cr@p - you have to undo two nuts, slide the mouthpiece into position, then re-tighten the nuts. Nowhere near as effecient as the mechanism on the Veritas BUJ.

If you've got the cash, go for the No8. I'm pretty sure it is a purchase you wouldn't regret.

Cheers

Another option, if you really need a longer plane but can't afford the £200+, would be to make one out of wood and just buy a nice thick blade... That's something I'm thinking about doing at some point.

...which is exactly what I did (28") and Philly supplied me with a 6mm iron - Rob
