Which glue for which wood?

Hi, I have just joined this forum after reading through for a few days to get ideas of what's right and wrong with different aspects of woodworking.
I'm no professional so wont be able to achieve some of the brill projects some of you guys have made. I only have a 10' x 8' shed which I'm just changing into a proper workshop rather than a junk store.
Anyway what I want to know (will have more questions later) is what is the best type of glue for different woods, ie best for soft wood, hard wood, indoor use and outdoor use, or is there a glue out there suitable for all uses. Only ever used PVA glue.

I have always had an interest in woodworking since leaving school many many moons ago, since 1975 infact but now I have finished my fibreglass business I have a bit of time on my hands at making something of interest.
As I say probably more questions later.

Hi Russ and welcome to the forum.

PVA glue in one form or another is fine for 90% of the joints. It's only when you get into specialist areas such as boat building etc you may need to go to a different type of glue.

Welcome to the forum, Russ. PVA is fine for most purposes. For outdoor use, use a waterproof version. If you want to get into veneering or laminating, epoxy or urea formaldehyde glues (Cascamite) are a better option. UF is also good for high moisture areas.

Best all round? I'd say Everbuild D4 for nearly everything. Some will swear by Titebond and one or two others - there's no reason not to use waterproof stuff indoors. Remember there's a big difference between waterproof and water resistant.

Thanks for the glue info chaps, its all been taken on board.
Is it best bought online? apart from such as B&Q I dont know of anywhere in my area to buy.

A bit off topic but I'm not getting email notifications of replies to my topic. I do have the default set to send me notifications. Anyone else had this problem?

I never bother with the email thing, however have you subscribed to your post? Top left hand corner, then followed on from there?


Buying online is fine, but postage may be an issue with the weight of glue. See if there is a screwfix/ toolstation near you. Plus do a search for tool shops/suppliers and builders merchants in your area. You will find quite a few i would think.
