Which Decking Paint

I am after some recommendations regarding treating an old tired softwood deck. The deck was treated with Ronseal decking oil a few years ago but within six months was peeling quite bad, so please good people, do not recommend any Ronseal products as they won't get a look in.

I have been reading online and on the B&Q site it talks about deck paint and I wondered about this, does anyone have experience of deck paint as opposed to oil or stain?

My deck has seen some abuse over the years with paint & glue splashes etc so all this will need to be cleaned off first, together with what's left of the old Ronseal stuff.

What do you think?

I've used Cuprinol decking oil for the last three years in a seaside environment and it's worked fine with no peeling. It gets a single coat every year.

I've only used budget decking oil, it's never seemed to make a film finish - just soaked in and coloured/waterproofed the timber. Can the current finish be jet washed off and a different oil used? Any finish that leaves a surface coat on treated softwood decking sounds like trouble to me.

Can the current finish be jet washed off and a different oil used? Any finish that leaves a surface coat on treated softwood decking sounds like trouble to me.

I have used the pressure washer several times and the old Ronseal stuff still clings on in places, it leaves a real mess as it is so patchy. So, yes the old stuff needs to come off first - but how? Is one of the deck restorers or strippers likely to be much good or would I need something more aggressive? I guess the only real way to find out is to 'suck it & see'.

There doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm on the forum for deck paint so maybe I will have another look at an oil. The Liberon mentioned seems to have good reviews online so maybe that is the answer.

There was a thread on here a while back. I can't credit the original author but the advice was:

"Scrub it with Oxalic acid. Buy it in crystal form on eBay,
mix it with warm water and get on your knees with a scrubbing brush."

Try thin bleach.

It will also kill mould.

Will the Oxalic acid get the old finish off? I might give it a try as I already have some knocking about somewhere.
