"Metal work of any significance on a wood lathe is limited to softer alloys with hand tools."
You mean a bit like this Chas? Ali turned in my K10 (the SK100 predecessor) with a pointy live tail centre using an HSS 3/8" spindle gouge. Slowly, slowly and I finished up with a lot of ali wool  Delicate cuts and it's really not very difficult. I have also turned some tiny brass pegs for a couple of pocket watch stands I turned.
