I've just been reading the 'Which Digital SLR?' thread with interest as I'll be looking for a decent camera shortly.

However, for all those occasions when I don't have the camera with me, I'd like to upgrade my mobile to one that has a genuine camera incorporated, rather than the kids toy on my current model.

Is there a phone available that will take photos of good enough quality to use on my website?

Suggestions please...

Cheers
Dan

It was my birthday last week and SMIMBO bought me a LG KC910 Renoir camera phone. 8 Mega pixels with flash and video. This is a reduced sample and a bigger image in the link. I have only had it for 5 days so I can't comment on it really but so far so good.

Even though this is a 8MP camera my 6mp SLR blows this away.

This would be my recommended device; http://europe.nokia.com/n79

5Mpix with autofocus, Carl Zeiss branded optics, good flash, proper lens cover slider which activates camera and it feels "right" and robust in hand. It also has received high marks on reviews and it must be very affordable nowadays. I used to have one in active use before handing it over to my son and he has been very happy with it and have not yet been able to destroy it, so seems to be worth something on robustness scale ;)

Nowadays I use E71 which is not worthy as a camera phone but shines as an messanger phone.

With only one exception (from memory) all the photos on my website are less than 800 pixels wide, so worry about quality, not pixel count.

the gadget show on channel 5 tested them a while ago - I think it was the nokia 6500 that won easily - over 60% of people thought it took the best picture of lots of camera phones.
Only 3 megapixels IIRC, but it's overall quality that counts, not headline numbers. My SLR has "only" 5 megapixels, but they're good quality pixels...

The best results I've seen tend to be from the Sony-Ericsson 'K' series phones, although the LG Viewty had a good camera and the Nokia N95 I have now has a reasonable one, I've yet to see any photos produced by camera phones that beat those taken on my old S-E K800.

Of course no phone camera will ever compete with a proper camera but then again you'll find it hard trying to phone anyone using a Cannon A1

But these were taken using a phone

Although a lot of pixels help, the most important thing is the lens.
which is why some cameras photo's are better than others. Again the quality of the picture (camera of phone) wholly depends who's taking it.
IMHO.

You're absolutely right yer Lordship, that's why if I want a decent picture it's out with the Pentax DLSR, but the K800 produced superlative pictures for a camera-phone.
Very nice pictures by the way, you must have been well pleased when you saw how those came out! :)

This site has some quick reviews of mobiles, including test / sample pictures, although would like to recommend them to get more interesting test shot targets ;-)
