Hi
I have a 50L 8-bar air compressor. I want to nail cedar T&G cladding on a shed frame using stainless steel annular nails . I know little about nail guns so would welcome recommendations on air nail guns and on the suppliers of suitable nails.

I came across this post in a thread and it looked out of place, perhaps it was meant to go here?

You don't need a very powerful nailer for cedar as it's not a dense wood so anything that can handle upto 35mm should be OK. I've recently done a cedar featheredge fence using a Dewalt dc618 cordless and had it on the lowest setting

Cheers
Andy

That is as expected. My main problem is that when smooth nails are put in with a hammer the centre boards bow out when water gets into the wood: the expansion is enough to remove the nails. That is why I want to use round-headed stainless steel annular nails. I don't know what gauge they would be because of the annular rings, I also don't know if round-headed nails will work in a nail gun
Hope someone knows

You can get guns that shoot round headed nails. But for 1 shed I'd nail by hand.......

With an air nailer I've found you have to wind the pressure down so the nails sit a little proud of the surface and set them properly by hand, otherwise the nailer has a tendency to punch them below the surface which is a pain

Clipped head nails on cladding look funny to me.

Thanks. The shed is the first job but I am about to start a timber framed house which will have cedar cladding so if I can find another air framing nailer it will get some use. What is the difference between round head and clipped nailers.

Why don't you use whatever nails you like and one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004 ... ge_o00_s00

Clipped head nails have 'D' shaped heads....not fully round.
Most framing nailers take clipped head nails.....
Coil nailers take round headed nails and have bigger magazines so go longer between reloading.

I've got 2 makita coil nailers and they are much better than my old framing guns.......

I realised the difference when I saw a picture. I also think I read that one model took clipped ones for the first half dozen and then round ones??

Can I resurrect this thread. I haven't done anything about it as I have been struggling to get planning permission but hope to win on appeal.
The only collated SS annular nails I have found are 34 degree and 50mm long. Anyone have a source for other angles and shorter lengths?

I just used a hammer to manually bang stainless annular ring nails into the shed timber frame I built.
I pre-drilled the shiplap cladding (as I believe is recommended) to prevent splitting the boards.

Thanks Roughcut.
I could do this but the cladding is to go on a shed which is 8m x 5m. So there is quite a bit and I want a nailgun that will do that and the timber frame house I want to build later in the year.

If you are building a house you are going to need a gun that shoots 50 to 100mm nails.... For the framing and cladding.

For the second fix work most people use a 15 or 16 gauge nailer...

A 50 mm nail is probably about right if you have 20 mm thick cladding
