Hi all,

Anyone suggest where I might get brightly coloured emulsion paint? I've done all the DIY shops, even the Dulux shop (Now that's a shop I will never visit again, all too busy chatting to help a customer!!).

My son wants a big rainbow in his bedroom so I said I'd paint one. The best I've found is 2.5l cans of paint at nearly £20 each. I don't even need 500ml really. Looking for bright red, blue, yellow and green.

Cheers.

Dulux trade centers should be able to mix up what you need in small 100mls tester pots they have a range of over 3000 colours.

The other option is student quality artists acrylics such as Daler Rowney System3from your local art shop

I'd be tempted to look in a craft or toy shop (Hobbicraft, for instance?) and buy some acrylic paints. You can get big tubs of brightly coloured paints for a couple of quid.

Tried the Dulux trade center, there were 3 guys on the counter and the shop was otherwise empty. I walked in, one of them answered a call, the other 2 turned their backs on me and walked off. They were stood in the doorway to the office having a chat. After nearly 10 mins the guy on the phone finished and inally served me. He said they would only mix colours into 2.5l tins at a stupid price. I have never experienced such bad customer service before. They are a disgrace.

As for tinting white, would it give vibrant colours?

I'll second the acrylic paints suggestion. I've painted on my daughter's bedroom walls with acrylics and they are nice bright colours. I buy them in an art store and they come in things like small washing up liquid bottles - I'm guessing 0.5l.

Cheers

if you dont want to go down the acrylic paint route, i would recommend B&Q as they can mix up small testers in pretty much any color. Failing that there are small tubs of paint in "Crayola" colors, but they were more expensive if i remember rightly

I've had this site bookmarked for ages - they recommend acrylics. I just checked the site out and it doesn't seem to work properly in Firefox, but seems ok in IE. There are also some dead links, but still quite a bit of stuff there. Shame the users gallery isn't up, because there used to be some amazing things there.

Excellent site Dave thanks, will keep me busy tomorrow after my morning of fishing in the rain.

Also thanks everyone else, excellent advice, I can always rely on UKWorkshop no matter what the subject. I'm going down the acrylic route, off to Hobbycraft tomorrow. It will be a short while till it's complete but I'll post pics if you want.

Martin.

p.s. It is sort of wood related... I'm making a box that slips over the headbord on his bed which will be in the design of Thomas The Tank Engine, which I can take off when he reaches 18 years old or so
