Whats the best way to remove saw dust from wood prior to finishing it?

Ive used a tack cloth but is there anything else I can use to make sure its all gone

hi Bassbear

I just had the same question for finishing this stool.

It was suggested to use white spirit, which I did.

Worked very well for cleaning it all up, although I did decide to leave it to dry out overnight before starting to apply a finish as it didnt seem to have evaporated quite enough, but it was fine by morning.

If you have an air line blow it off with compressed air (away from the area you use for finishing)

Apparently, (an this comes from a master cabinet maker) using a compressed airline inbeds the particles into the surface an seen as your in the finishing stage it never gets evened out an can spoil the finish.

Me personally I'm not that good to be worrying about such tiny things so I just brush it off.

I use a tack cloth wehn spraying - spray some of the mix onto the cloth, wipe over, then spray a coat immediately. Sand first coat with 400 grit, tack cloth again then spray next coat. With precat lacquer you can get away with one base coat of sanding sealer followed by one lacquer coat. Having said that my spraying leaves much to be desired.

Some months ago, one of the big firms was advertising "NEW washable use again" tack cloths in the US Fine Woodwkg. magazine, with "microfibers".

A raid of the kitchen sink cupboard secured a microfibre cleaning cloth (probably from Tesco) and amazingly, it seems to work without being tacked by the usual few drops of varnish / thinners etc. I think they are 3 for a quid from the Value Range; just wash after use. I am permitted to add then to normal laundry if just dusty! I think microfibre cleaning cloths are knitted up from very fine triangular x section man made fibres as they clean all mannner of things without detergent and are also grease attracting - good for your glasses!
