Ok lets continue the game. If you won anything over a few mil. What would the FIRST three things you would do, in order of importance?

For me it would be:

1. The very first thing I would do is book a long holiday. The three of us get away from 'life' to consider our future.

2. Get my health issues sorted privately, whatever it cost.

3. Buy or build a house with lots of land. Probably a small holding where we could live off the land if the money ran out. I'd make sure the running costs were so low that we'd never have to work if the money did run out. Solar panels, wind turbines, insulation, etc, etc. Whatever it took.

That's the dream for me. I care not about fast cars, booze, night clubs, gambling, prostitutes ;), etc I just want a peaceful life and my health.

If anyone on this forum should win any amount of money at all and, are at all worried that it might change them for the worse, and wish to avoid such a painful scenario, my address is....

123 Skint Row
London

Please, cash only and, no small coinage.

TIA

Agreed Tom, you've done all that and got it all sorted...but then what you you stuff in your dream shop with a limitless budget? - Rob

Well if the budget was limitless then the sky's the limit. I'd have everything. But one thing I'd probably play with the most is a full size CNC. But use it in an 'artisan' way. i.e not for batching stuff out but for adding features to my work that can't be done easily by other methods.

I'd probably explore other materials too. So a metal shop would be built as part of the 'complex' ;)

Happily I don't do the lottery, so I don't have to worry about it.

This may be seen as heresy, but I actually found that I was focusing too much of my attention on tools and kit. My (small) 'collection' was starting to get a little ornamental and was perhaps doing a better job reflecting the woodworker that I aspired to be, rather than helping woodworker I am get things done. And of course it all needs looking after - it's easy to forget that 'stuff' is a burden. So I pared everything back to basic hand-tools and that's the way I'd like to stay.

If funds allowed though, I'd send myself off on courses. I like working with minimalistic kit - but I want to be able to get the most out of it.

I would buy a nice plot of land (not too big mind). Build a nice house to my tastes. Then build a large workshop come garage which would be around 8x the size of a double garage.

Then buy a nice table saw etc (I certainly wouldn't buy one of everything as I'd never use them or respect how much each thing cost).

I'd also buy a nice classic car to restore.

Then if I'm still not happy I obviously have much deeper issues so I'd give myself a slap and carry on making things and landscaping the garden.

Where do I sign?

This is a good one. I'd do exactly that. Once everything settles down, I'd probably go on a long course with someone like DC or DS. I might even go to the States.

My workshop would be somewhere between 40'and 50' long, probably have a could moulded hull sheathed in epoxy. It'd be cutter rigged, have windvane self steering and a full range of electronic gizmos that I fully expect to go wrong in the tropics. 100 gallons of fuel and 200 of water. My crew would be all girls ranging in age from 2 to 30 (and a bit).

Well Ernie brought me £25 this week.

Now how do I ensure it doesn't go to my head? :)
S

I usually look at Lie Nielsen or Veritas stuff in the catalogues!

I think a DVD on fettling really cheap and nasty hand tools is called for, for us mere mortals.

----------------

Incidentally, I've finally worked out why I'm never successful. A friend told me this:

Hymie complains to God every week in synagogue about never succeeding with the lottery:

"Lord, if only you'd let me win, you know all the good things I'd do with the money. I'd build an orphanage for You, and that new wing on the hospital. I only want a very little for myself. But every week it's the same: I watch the numbers come up, but not even the smallest prize! Am I such a bad person that I couldn't be trusted with even a little win?"

After several months of this, the congregation is quietly fuming (he doesn't do this silently), and even the Almighty is geting a tad exasperated. So it's not really a surprise when one week a very deep sonorous voice booms back:

"Hymie, HYMIE! Enough already! I HAVE heard you, and I understand, and I will consider the matter. But what you are asking is a very big thing, stretching even my own miraculous powers. So if you are to win anything at all, by next week's draw, I've decided you must meet me half way:

"Hymie, at least GO BUY A TICKET."

(it's the oldies that are the best...)

Ah har! A boat sounds good to me too! I would love to build a boat, have wondered about it for ages. So what to do with my millions after sorting out various debts for friends and family plus donations to the worthy charities...

For starters:
1) Walk out of work and never go back ta ta
2) Take a decently long holiday with my nearest and dearest. Always thought it would be great to setup somewhere nice for a while and just have people come stay for weeks at a time, all expenses paid of course :)
3) Go on a boat building course, and spend some time learning from my own mistakes in my own time.
4) Set sail, preferably with a couple of baited rods.

I want to build a boat!!! :)

No I think he was talking about his wife and kids ;)

A Boat would be fun. I'll stick that on my list ;) Probably be more into speed boats and dinghys tho tbh.

I've got my eye on a nice little wood not far from my home - always wanted to spend more time bodging.

Also Scrabster lighthouse is on my list.

Much of the rest I'll spread around among my friends.

I rather think all those fancy tools would loose their "desirability" if they were easily available.

Tom's right they are the wife and kids.

That seemed obvious enough. The only question I had in my mind was just how smooth this bit was:

30 (and a bit).

Sounds good to me. When shall we go? - oh yes got to win the blinking thing first.

Anyone want to buy a nice furniture business. Hardly stressful at all, bargain price £54m
