What to avoid ( Danger when Turning )

What have I learnt in my brief life as a wood-turner?

All of the above and really very little else. I still get catches - I still make creations for the rubbish bin - my wife does wonder quite why I spend so much time in the workshop and produce so little.

I do have the bonus of experience turning metal so I have left the chuck key in - and don't do it now - I have done this and and that, and don't do that now, but in general I will take your advice on board, but do expect that, like all good operatives, it won't happen to me - until it does of course, and then I will know!

beware of........ ebay...

"and buying a bigger lathe will not automatically make you a better turner !"

and there are plenty of good buys on Ebay, so that's not true either. If you can't do your homework properly, then you *do* deserve you get your fingers burnt.

i think tom meant, beware of ebay its a seductive place that will propell you down the slope emptying your wallet as you go

likewise with the lathe i meant that buying a bigger lathe does not automatically improve your turning - of course there may be advantages to upgrading ( I went from an M900 to a ABVL1200 for more power and electronic variable speed) - but its good to learn to use the one you have first , before decidning to upgrade
