Like cars or motorbikes there isn't one perfect lathe, that's why we all keep changing them. You can't compare a Porsche and a Land Rover but they are both the best of there class. If we are talking money no object then it would have to be three ( all with the same spindle thread of course). A VB for bowls, a Oneway 2436 for a bit of everything and probably a small Vicmarc for pens etc.

Peter.

either a VB36 or the big Wivamac - or one of those re-engineered graduates with variable speed.

tho in real lottery win territory i would go to an engineering company and get one custom built.

One that works

Seriously there are so many top level lathes to choose from even the pros differ. Probably something like one of the Wivamacs or eqivalent with full range variable speed and all the trimmings. I'd also want a raft of lessons to learn to do it justice and something a bit bigger than a 6x10 shed to use it in.

Pete

VB36 :D (and a much bigger workshop.. :( )

This isn't some sort of shopping list for you,is it Allen ?

Robust 25 - American Beauty !

Thats a new one on me

Google here I come

My Tutor was using one over at David Ellsworth's i understand, said it was brill,

- foldaway tailstock was genius.........

edit

He has 2 - so they must be ok !

EQUIPMENT:

Robust Lathes (Two) (25" capacity) - Authorized Dealer

Poolewood EURO 2000 Lathes(two) (20" dia. capacity)

Woodfast (short bed) bowl lathe (16" dia. capacity)

Jet Mini-Lathe (10" dia. capacity)

Jim Thompson lathe (custom built) (30" dia. capacity)

I agree! You can have the best lathe going but your the driver.

Just helps when the thing works. I agree that the lathe is not going to make someone a better turner but the better the lathe the less limitatione. Personally I suspect that once you get into the higher level you are talking personal preference rather than which lathe is best. I am using a Jet mini at the moment and it doesn't make me a better turner, just limits the things that I can do.

I stepped up from a PM3520A to a Robust last year, and love it. For me the sliding headstock is a must. My lathe sits in a corner, so outboard turning isn't an option, and it is a real back saver. If I wanted a bowl lathe, the VB without a question, but no matter what configuration it comes in, it just says 'bowl' lathe to me. The Oneway takes a back seat to the Robust to me. A Vicmark looks good as well. I do have a Jet 1220vs for the little things. If I won the lottery, I would have just about every lathe out there with variable speed, and a 10,000 sq ft shop. I would probably custom design a lathe and a big bandsaw for myself.

i suppose i would like just a dvr, cos it would do all i wanted. if i won the lottery i would still wheeler deal and barter, cos i have done it all the time

I'd like one that wasn't made from parts as tough as chocolate, as my axminster awvsl seems to be

Sorry to here that , but that is the draw back with Chiwanese imports , built to a price not a standard

See if you can get a old Harrison Graduate or jubilee , something built like a tank and has already lasted 40 years
