What is meant by 3/4 inch mitre slot

Hi,

I have an Axminster TS-200 which came with a rubbish Mitre gauge which has a runner with about 2mm of play in it (in a T slot). I want to replace it with something thats a lot tighter. I've measured it and the dimensions are :

bottom width measurement is 2cms (3/4 inch)
top width measurement is 1.5cms (5/8ths I think)
depth 7mm

*note measurements are done with a steel rule*

So would a standard 3/4 inch runner fit it or is the standard a square rather than t-shape ? I've been through some catlogues but none of them explain it specifically

Straight or 'Tee' will do the trick. If the fit is that bad try fitting a row of 20mm ball races, slides well but needs accurate fitting.

Sorry for being thick but a non-T slot (straight) slide that was quoted as 3/4 inch - would that actually fit (i've attached a picture of my slots measurements so I am more clear) :

The standard is square or rather oblong.Could you get something made by a local machine shop.

Short answer is NO.

A 3/4" mitre guide will not fit your machine as your slot is actually 15mm wide and 3/4" is actually 25.4mm*0.75 = 19.05mm (not 20mm)

You would be best off asking a machine shop to make a new bar, or make one yourself from some ply or hardwood.

i prefer good quality ply for this as it does not change with humidity

thanks all, didn't realise I could make one out of something as simple as ply so I will go for that option, though I do wish axminster had put a standard slot on the saw.

I am actually mounting a router into the table saw (got a thread going on projects forum if you want to see what I mean) so will be putting a standard slot on that, would have been good to have been able to used the same mitre on both.

Thats an excellent idea, just so happens I have some PVC window surround material that should do the job perfectly - problem solved.

If a bar is a bit sloppy in the mitre slot there is an easy and quick solution.

Punch a few dots along its length with a centre punch. As well as making the dimple, the displaced metal will be forced up like a crater to swell the effective size of the bar. I'm not convinced it would take up 2mm, but certainly 0.5 or even 1mm is feasible. If that makes it too tight, just top it off with a file.

It works very well, you can get a snug bar in just a few minutes.
