Sycamore I believe, kindly supplied by/borrowed from Mark Sanger.

This is my first ever piece of real turning, as in not just making shavings but also making an actual piece. I must say a few thanks are due to some other people though. In no particular order:

miles_hot - thanks for organising the bash, I know how much coordination goes into such a thing and it's no mean feat, you did a great job. Also many thanks to Caroline for a seemingly endless supply of exceptional food

Marc Sanger - thanks for not minding me arsing about with your lathe for most of the afternoon, also for the blank that became this piece and the various bits of instruction you provided today

George (cornucopia) - thanks for sharpening my gouges and the instructions thereon, also for being an extremely capable demonstrator/guide for someone wielding chisels in anger for the first time.

This is my first piece of many I have no doubt, and today has been a very useful experience just being around other turners, seeing so many different techniques and styles is very inspirational. It's also been great to get hands on experience with some of the kit people use, I'm pretty sure now what my first real lathe is going to be after using a couple today.

I've also added a whole heap of things to the shopping list, now I need a better chuck, more jaws, buffing wheels and compounds, waxes...

Well done Peter. You've done very well. Taught by some of the finest turners on this forum.

Sounds like you all had a great day.

I've got a little bit of genetic help as well, but really you can't underestimate the value of having someone there showing you the ropes. It was a huge privilege to have one-to-one instruction from people like George and Mark, I'm sure it's brought me on to a point that would be at least weeks away, perhaps months if I'd just gotten stuck in by myself

Well done Peter, looks like it's fair to say you're hooked, as you say a few minutes spent with a good instructor is worth many hours floundering around on your own.
