Since this a very European thread it gives me chance to post this again.

European National Anthem played on a Hammered Dulcimer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VGhhxzP364

aka Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Ode to Joy

It's a great shame that such a wonderful piece of music was hijacked by the EU.
"La gazza ladra" might have been more apt.

I guess part of it is only hearing the word.

People might have been saying Romania but I just heard "R" and "mania" and automatically heard it as Rumania.

It was written by European foreigners! :roll:
Words by some chap called Schiller and music by little known European called Beethoven (funny name, funny geezer :roll: ).
We don't want them coming here, moving in next door and lowering the tone!

I see it could come as a bit of a shock to discover that so many great pieces of classical music were not composed by Englishman.

Well there you go then - they ain't all bad these foreign Johnnies.

I'm pretty sure I have only heard the usage of Romania in the last few years as I've known the place as Rumania for the best part of 50 years.
Fair enough. Why post a link to an article that says otherwise, then?

All that means is that I hadn't heard, or rather seen, it as Romania.

There seems to have been a lot of rebranding recently.

Burma -> Myanmar
Ceylon -> Sri Lanka
Bombay -> Mumbai
Oil of Ulay -> Olay
Lemon Jif (cleaner) -> Cif lemon
Marathon -> Snickers

:lol:

There's even talk of renamimg others;

Spain to Espana
Germany to Deutschland
etc
And some johnny foreigners have the temerity to use different letters, too! :lol:
