I stripped a stack of good pallets down last week for someone who wanted shut of them. Turns out it'll be a regular supply too as they own a plumbing supplys store and they have at least 12 large pallets every month going spare. Anyway, I made a job lot of bird boxes from the thin latts and put them up for sale at the end of my drive and raised a little funds but I have some thicker latts left over. These are too thick for bird boxes. here's the dimensions :

Width 3"
Length 3 foot
thickness 1"

this is rough unplaned timber and I have about 30 lengths.

I'll take a photo tonight if needed but it's the top latts of a pallet similar to this one...

I made a load of bench tops for the greenhouse and potting shed from pallets. Very rugged and I guess they are treated as still there in as new condition three years on.

Not sure I would risk my p/t or planes with the timber though - plenty of pressed in grit etc!

ha ha thats great.

hmmm, might knock some planters up

I knocked up a couple of planters for the front of the house - 30 minutes, a coat of whatever I found on the shelf and they're done. SWMBO happy so quick points earned.

It might be worth taking a closer look at the pallets. I used to work at a warehouse that had a couple of hundred pallets going to waste every month. I spied more than a few that were made of woods such as Oak, Iroko and sapele as well as what I think were cherry and beech.

I pulled these apart and planed them up. Their not exactly the sort of thing you'd be happy to pay for at Yandles, but if your looking to make small items such as boxes or small gifts, then it can prove to be a gold mine. Checkout this thread for some more pallet ideas.

HTH. :D

What about some shelving units for the kitchen? You can never have enough shelving in one house!

I made a few sections of 'picket-fencing from pallets. Just the low variety as allowed by most Councils for 'Open-plan' frontages.
