I would say definately elm. You can bring it to my workshop in Scissett if you like to compare it with some elm I have in store.

Thanks all for the replies, looking at those pics and your comments I'm inclined to think it could be elm but 2 different cuts, nice spot with the spalting too, it does have a little at one end.

Chris, I take it you're Chris Tribe? One of the other guys posted a link to your site when I asked a question about non-yellow finishes for pale wood. Very impressive work you've done and I like what you're doing with the classes, I'm doing an evening class over in Leeds but it's all change next term and I'm not sure if it will be as useful as before - especially as I'm building a leccy guitar!
